Love and Indifference

Desert heart
Beneath a milking bosom
Unforgetting victim are you
Under guardianship
Of a newly birthed soul.

Where there should be mirth
There is reason.
Where there must be love
There is indifference.

Not all the milk in the world
Could nourish a young soul
When served on a salver so icy cold.

The heat of your injustice
Can’t ever be resolved
By the young innocent.

You may be passed
Your soul’s armistice
But, you must be companion
Feigning and joyful
Not a frail plaintiff.

Cease from blowing
Your cold, inhospitable winds
On the warmth
Of her loving soul.

You must try to love the babe as she is
Before she grows to resent you, when she is old.
