Bernie Sanders releases 10 years of tax returns

Sanders has called for President Trump to release his tax returns and today he finally did the same but it doesn't seem like examining Sanders' tax returns are a top priority for the voters we spoke with but they want them released anyway. "If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too".

The context was Sanders' wealth - revealed after he released 10 years' worth of tax returns on Monday showing that he had been "fortunate" even as he pushed for a more progressive tax system.

The tax returns released on Monday showed Sanders paid a 26 percent effective tax rate on his adjusted gross income in 2018.

"It comes from a book I wrote, pretty good book", Sanders told a Fox News Channel town hall on Monday. "Like in this case, I always remind them that CAP has no editorial control over Think Progress".

The increased wealth of the liberal candidate who has positioned himself as a champion of the people has raised questions about whether he can still speak for working-class Americans. Sanders has said that as far as his speaking fees go, he donates those to charity.

The candidates' disclosures come as Democrats continue to demand Donald Trump's tax returns, which the president claims he can't make public because he is under IRS audit.

On Saturday, Democratic lawmakers gave tax authorities a final deadline of April 23 to hand over Trump's returns, but it remained unclear if his administration will comply.

In 2014, the year before he launched his first presidential campaign, Sanders had an adjusted gross income of $205,271.

Mr Trump himself has claimed that he can not release his tax returns because they are under audit, although technically there is nothing preventing him from doing so.

According to returns provided by his campaign, Sanders reported a total family income of $566,421 in 2018 - $382,920 of which came from writing and royalties. "Hey President Trump, my wife and I just released 10 years".

Several in the growing field of Democratic 2020 contenders, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren, and Governor Jay Inslee of Washington, have released their 2018 returns in recent weeks.

The revelation that Sanders is now a millionare had, in some quarters, surfaced doubts over his ability to effectively deliver the progressive populist message that made him a political star. The senator and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, a lawyer, reported an adjusted gross income of about $1.9 million in 2018, substantially more than the $142,000 Harris declared in 2004 when she was the district attorney of San Francisco. But his efforts at transparency paled in comparison to his opponent for the Democratic nomination Hillary Clinton, who released eight years of her tax returns.

There is no requirement that presidential candidates release their tax returns, but many have done so by tradition.

Over the past five years, the couple has paid over $2.2 million in federal taxes at an average effective tax rate of about 33 percent.
