Lakers part ways with head coach Luke Walton

Vlade Divac and Luke Walton were Laker teammates in 2004-05.

Two days into the offseason and the Lakers are down a team president and a head coach as the franchise continues to struggle to right itself almost seven years after the Dwight Howard-Steve Nash experiment went bust. The former Golden State assistant never led Los Angeles to the playoffs, even with the arrival of LeBron James last summer.

Walton had been at the head coach of the Lakers since 2017. "We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward".

Steve Kerr didn't approve of the Lakers' firing of Luke Walton.

Walton was sacked following a disastrous season for the Lakers.

"I'm disappointed for Luke".

While Walton's replacement hasn't been named, multiple reports - including Sports Illustrated and Cleveland's NEWS 5 - have surfaced that Ty Lue is the frontrunner to become the next Lakers coach. The Lakers announced on March 30 that he was done for the season. The two sides agreed to move on from each other after just two seasons with Walton as the head coach.

Charged with trying to blend a roster constructed with eclectic veterans on one-year contracts and a core group of young prospects still learning how to play around James, with a plethora of ball handlers but not enough shooting, Walton had what many felt was the most daunting job in the National Basketball Association.

Rondo, who is on the sixth team of his career, praised Walton for his ability to relate to players. "That's going to be the only thing that's unfair in this conversation we have today because I think at the end of the day, we are all different", James said in his interview with Hill. Ball then reportedly returned to Los Angeles via arrangements made by the team without having surgery. "They say opportunity is everything in the league and they gave me that right from the jump".

Despite everything, the Lakers went 15-8 in their 23 games with James, Ingram and Ball all healthy.

Ex-Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue, the former Lakers guard, already has been frequently mentioned as a potential replacement for Walton due to his obvious ties to James.
