Boeing CEO admits faulty sensor triggered automatic flight control system in crashes

"We at Boeing are sorry for the lives lost in the recent 737 MAX accidents", Muilenburg said in the statement, adding that a software update is expected to be finished and certified in the coming weeks. "Spirit and Boeing have agreed to work together to minimize the disruption to Spirit operations and the supply chain", said Spirit Aerosystems President and CEO Tom Gentile.

The findings were released Thursday in Ethiopia, based on the analysis of a team of 18 investigators, less than a month after the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash killed all 157 people on board.

The software update, Boeing said, adds layers of protection and will stop erroneous data from activating the system.

After the Lion Air crash last October, pilots and airlines complained that they had not been adequately briefed on MCAS by Boeing.

The fallout from two crashes of the new 737 Max aircraft in Indonesia and Ethiopia is now not just a grave problem for Boeing.

"The thrust was full bore the whole way", said Roger Cox, a former accident investigator at the National Transportation Safety Board, who flew earlier models of the 737 while working as an airline pilot.

The aircraft manufacturer has said it will introduce a software update for the MCAS in a bid to resolve the sensor problems.

Ralph Nader, the noted consumer rights advocate, called for a recall and consumer boycott of the Boeing jet grounded by regulators across the globe after two deadly crashes.

Separately, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chairman Robert Sumwalt told reporters that US investigators were given the raw data from Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 as soon as it was read in France last month.

He said that safety was a core value for everyone at Boeing and the safety of its airplanes, customers, passengers and crews was always a top priority.

Officials said a full report would be completed within a year of the crash.

The company said that to make sure unintended activation of the system doesn't happen again, Boeing is developing software and "associated comprehensive pilot training" for the Max.

Earlier this week, United States regulators demanded further improvements to a proposed MCAS fix before it could be submitted for review and announced a review of the certification of the automated flight control system on the 737 MAX.

Former NTSB chairman Christopher Hart, who was named by the Federal Aviation Administration this week to head an worldwide team to review the safety of the Boeing 737 MAX, told reporters Friday he thought the review, which will start Monday, could take about three months.
