Johnny Manziel's football career hit quite the road block when he was barred from the Canadian Football League at the end of February, leading to his release by the Montreal Alouettes.

Quarterback Johnny Manziel has signed a player agreement with the Alliance of American Football, the league confirmed on Saturday night.

The Commanders had the rights to Manziel because he played college football at Texas A&M. When asked about Manziel, Commanders GM Daryl Johnston said that teams generally try to avoid dealing with a "self-inflicted" disruption. Manziel will join the Memphis Express, who claimed him off waivers. The Express lost quarterback Zach Mettenberger on Saturday, who left after their first offensive snap with an ankle injury - according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. They started with former Penn State standout Christian Hackenberg, who was drafted in the second round of the 2016 National Football League draft by the New York Jets.

Teams with the worst records in the league will get the chance to pick him up, according to ESPN. Former Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers replaced Mettenberger in the loss in Utah.

Polian also said he believes Manziel will benefit from "the coaching and mentorship" of Memphis coach Mike Singletary. Other than Orlando, which has Garrett Gilbert at quarterback, most of the league's teams have had some issues at the position. It was his first football action since he was released by the NFL's Cleveland Browns following the 2015 season.

In Memphis, Manziel could get an opportunity to play quickly.

Manziel spent 2018 in Canada, playing five games with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and 11 for the Montreal Alouettes following a midseason trade.
