Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says the school that collapsed in the Ilafaji area of the state yesterday March 13th, was operating illegally.

Ambode, the state governor, said his deputy was visiting hospitals and that the government would cover the hospital bills of survivors.

"She looked lifeless, and I was not even sure she was breathing", Adedoyin said in her native Yoruba language.

A resident of the collapsed building at 63 Massey Street, who simply gave his name as Akin, said the developer found a way to rescue the property after it was marked for demolition by the State Building Control Agency.

It's not known how many people lived in the apartments that made up the rest of the complex.

"So far, from what I have been told, some people have been rescued and some people are already dead but, we were earlier informed that it was a school".

A Reuters reporter at the scene saw a boy of 10 being pulled out covered in dust but with no visible injuries.
