USA warns Germany over use of 'untrusted vendors' in 5G network

The Chinese telecoms behemoth has strenuously denied allegations its equipment could be used for espionage.

While some allies including NewZealand have succumbed to pressures from Washington, countries like Germany have refused to followed suit and has rolled out new conditions which must be met if the Chinese firm must take part in the 5G mobile network rollout.

In an interview with business daily Handelsblatt, Huawei's chief for West Europe, Vincent Pang, said the US warning went too far. Further, the US likely needs its allies to support the pushback against Huawei in order for the isolation tactic to have any meaningful effect.

An official from the German Economic Ministry dismissed the letter from Grenell, saying that it included no new information and reiterating that there was no evidence to support United States claims that Huawei posed a risk.

The US on Monday issued a warning that it will limit the intelligence it shares with countries that are using "untrusted" technology vendors, according to officials. "The 5G networks our allies buy won't be the networks that they eventually operate, as the software could be changed on a moment-to-moment basis by the manufacturer".

Neither the US State Department, the German economics minister nor Huawei immediately responded to requests for comment.

As CNN noted, the US has pushed for the "UK, Australia, Poland, the European Union, the Philippines and a slew of other countries" to impose bans or restrictions on Huawei products, which correlated with a ban in Australia and partial bans in New Zealand.

Along with worries about network security, U.S. prosecutors have charged Huawei and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, over alleged Iran sanctions violations, and Beijing and Washington are trying to settle a tariff war affecting a wide range of goods.

Grenell said in his letter that Chinese companies, under Chinese law, can be required to support China's security agencies and that inspections of Huawei software could not ensure there were no vulnerabilities, the newspaper said.

The US is going too far.
