Paul Manafort indicted on new fraud charges in NY

Within minutes of the sentencing, prosecutors in NY brought state charges against Manafort - a move that appeared at least partly created to guard against the possibility that President Donald Trump could pardon him.

In the 16-count indictment, Manafort faces raps for residential mortgage fraud, attempted residential mortgage fraud, conspiracy, falsifying business records and scheme to defraud.

Manafort, 69, faces up to 10 additional years in prison when he is sentenced Wednesday in Washington in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Manafort's sentence last week by US District Judge TS Ellis in Virginia, where he was convicted for financial crimes, was two decades below the upper limit of federal sentencing guidelines, prompting criticism among legal experts that it was too light. Trump's pardon power only applies to federal crimes, so he would not be able to help Manafort in a state case.

Both cases stem from an inquiry into alleged Russian election meddling in the 2016 United States elections.

Manafort pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy last year, which each carried a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Minutes after a Federal judge added 43 months to his sentence, NY state prosecutors unsealed an indictment that could yield another 7 years.

"On a human basis, it's a very sad day, I feel very badly for him", he told reporters on Wednesday. A number of people wrote letters to Jackson supporting Manafort including his wife, one of his daughters and his brother.

His attempts to cover up his crimes by asking witnesses to lie for him, Weissmann said, "is not reflective of somebody who has learned a harsh lesson".

Kate Beckinsale exudes off-duty glamour in skin-tight leather pants

He undermined the American political process by concealing from the public and Congress that he was working on behalf of Ukraine- and earning millions of dollars that he never reported to the IRS, she said. She allowed a disagreement over Manafort's bail to carry on for months and only threw him in jail last June when he was indicted for an attempt to tamper with witnesses in the case.

She said the question of whether any members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation was "not presented in the case".

"I am sorry for what I have done and all the activities that have gotten us here today", Manafort said in a steady voice. "For those mistakes, I am remorseful". The sentence came ontop of a four-year sentence another federal judge imposed on Manafort weeks before. After he pled guilty, he said, Manafort then lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a grand jury even though he had agreed to cooperate.

"What's happening today is not and can not be a review or revision of a sentence that was imposed in another court", she said.

Immediately following his sentencing in federal court, the Manhattan district attorney's office announced state fraud charges against him.

"I think she will run some of her time consecutively", said Wu, who appeared before Jackson during a previous stint representing Manafort's former business associate Rick Gates. Others who have pleaded guilty include former campaign aides Rick Gates and George Papadopoulos, former USA national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen.

"Therefore it was not resolved in this case either", Jackson said.

Prosecutors and Manafort's defense team made their own arguments in court Wednesday for how harsh the judge should be.
