The Associated Press reports racketeering conspiracy charges were brought against coaches at schools including Wake Forest University, Georgetown and the University of Southern California.

A release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in MA stated (via People), "Dozens of individuals involved in a nationwide conspiracy that facilitated cheating on college entrance exams and the admission of students to elite universities as purported athletic recruits were arrested by federal agents in multiple states and charged in documents unsealed on March 12, 2019, in federal court in Boston".

Much of the indictment revolves around William Rick Singer, the founder of a for-profit college counseling and preparation business known as "The Key".

In a statement, American Council on Education President Ted Mitchell said, "If these allegations are true, they violate the essential premise of a fair and transparent college admissions process".
