Muller Boateng and Hummels will no longer play for Germany - Low

Thomas Muller has revealed that he is "totally dumbfounded" and "angry" at Joachim Low's decision to axe himself, Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels from the German national team.

"I thank Mats, Jerome and Thomas for the many successful, extraordinary and unique years we shared".

"Thomas Muller (100 global caps), Mats Hummels (70) and Jerome Boateng (76) have played a total of 246 games for Germany and they helped shape an extremely successful decade for the DFB with winning the World Cup in 2014 being an absolute highlight".

Germany have effectively ended the global careers of three World Cup winners.

"Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller will no longer be in the squad of the national team", Low told Bild.

"Basically, we do not comment on sporting decisions of the national coach, the nomination of the squad of the national team is exclusively the responsibility of Joachim Low".

Loew says he wants to make clear the time is right for a "new start" before qualifying for the 2020 European Championship begins.

When making his announcement, Low claimed he now needs to look to the future to bring in a new era of success.

"However, I respect the new direction and understand the coach's decision". "Mats, Jerome and I are still in a position to play football at the highest level".

"It was important to me personally to explain to the players and managers of Bayern Munich my thoughts and plans". "At the same time, we question the timing and circumstances of the announcement of this decision to the players and the public".

Defenders Boateng and Hummels, both 30, and 29-year-old forward Muller had been mainstays of the setup under Low, but the coach said he wanted to give his team "a new face" after last year's World Cup group stage exit.

Mueller scored 38 goals in 100 appearances for Germany and had been a mainstay since finishing joint-top scorer at the World Cup in 2010, when he won the Best Young Player award.

"The national team's young players will receive the space necessary to develop fully. You have to take responsibility now".

The 59-year-old Germany boss has been under pressure to make sweeping changes since his side crashed out of the 2018 World Cup in the first round.

"I was always proud to wear the DFB shirt. But I would have obviously wished for a different departure".
