McConnell to call Senate vote on Democrats' Green New Deal

McConnell announced during a news conference Tuesday that the vote would "give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal".

"I've noted with great interest the Green New Deal and we're going to be voting on that in the Senate", McConnell told reporters Tuesday. "I support a green new deal".

Ocasio-Cortez's comments suggesting millionaires may have to pay 70 percent in taxes to fund the Green New Deal, coupled with a rocky unveiling, have not helped her case in winning over her more moderate colleagues. "The Green New Deal needs to be put into action immediately ... doesn't it?"

"There's a lot of people now going back on the Green New Deal, they're like 'Oh it's impractical, oh it's too expensive, oh it's all of this, '" Senator Cory Booker (D., N.J.), one of the many Democratic presidential hopefuls, said during a speech in Mason City, Iowa Friday.

"I really don't like their policy of taking away your vehicle, of taking away your airplane rights", President Donald Trump said at a rally in El Paso, Texas, on Monday, referring to the memo. The nonbinding resolution sets a goal to meet "100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable and zero-emission energy sources, " including nuclear power.

"Those are the only two things that are out there that actually deal with carbon on what Secretary Moniz called large-scale successes", he told E&E News, referencing testimony by former Obama Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz before the Energy and Natural Resources Committee last week (E&E Daily, Feb. 8). Trump said at the rally.

Baby with umbilical cord still attached found in middle of California road
The pair put the infant in the woman's vehicle where the heating was on, and discovered the uncut umbilical cord. Aurelio Fuentes, who found the infant, said he heard her crying and screaming. "OK, you know, this is a baby".

‘El Chapo’ Guzman Convicted on All Counts, Faces Life in Prison
Peña Nieto denied it, but the allegation fit a theme: politicians, army commanders, police and prosecutors, all on the take. Jurors were tasked with making 53 decisions about whether prosecutors had proven different elements of the case.

Iran and Israel trade threats of destruction
Iranians were also pictured burning numerous American flags as they celebrated the landmark anniversary in the country's capital. Extensive fireworks displays were held across Tehran on Sunday night, timed to coincide with the demonstrations.

The move is viewed as a political one, aimed at forcing rank-and-file Senate Democrats to take a stance on the progressive proposal, which has been co-sponsored by liberal congressional members and Democratic Senate presidential candidates. The GOP-controlled Senate scheduled a symbolic vote on single-payer health care legislation in 2017, a decision also created to put Democrats on the spot, and in January brought up foreign policy legislation that took on the boycott movement against Israel.

The Senate vote is not yet scheduled, and a spokesman for McConnell said that the Republican leader's office doesn't expect it to come this week.

Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, saw McConnell's call for a vote as a way to push Democrats to take an early position on the ambitious proposal.

McConnell and the GOP "are terrified of this winning vision of a just and prosperous future, " he said, adding that McConnell "thinks he can end all debate on the Green New Deal now and stop this freight train of momentum".

Republicans showed on Tuesday that they are ready to use the resolution as a political weapon against those Democrats.
