Senate vote rebukes Pres. Trump on Syria, Afghanistan

President Trump pushed back Friday on Senate Republicans, who voted overwhelmingly the previous day for a measure that rebuked his rationale for withdrawing United States troops from Syria and Afghanistan.

The statement from the President came a day after the Senate Republicans backed Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday voted for an amendment seeking a reversal of Trump's order to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria as well as a check on future plans to withdraw troops in Afghanistan.

The Senate voted 68-23 in favor of a non-binding amendment, drafted by Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying it was the sense of the Senate that Islamic militant groups in both countries continue to pose a "serious threat" to the United States.

"It would recognize the danger of a precipitous withdrawal from either conflict and highlight the need for diplomatic engagement and political solutions to the underlying conflicts in Syria and Afghanistan", McConnell said of his resolution earlier this week.

Trump announced plans for a USA pullout from Syria in December, saying the Islamic State had been defeated.

Still, the bill also includes an anti-boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) amendment that may prove hard to pass in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

However, the December measure went no further, since it never came up for a vote in the House of Representatives, then led by Trump's fellow Republicans.

Both Democrats and Republicans do not agree with the President and have even gone ahead to vote on a nonbinding amendment expressing strong opposition to Trump's withdrawal plans.

"That announcement alone has undermined our credibility in the eyes of our allies", he added.

With substantial support from both parties, the Senate on January 31 voted 68-23 in favor of a nonbinding amendment stating that the Senate believed that Islamic militant groups in both countries continue to pose a "serious threat" to US security.
