Kuchar starts Hawaii vacation with a victory

Matt Kuchar kept another clean card and shot a 4-under 66 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Sony Open, with a chance to win twice in one PGA Tour season for only the second time in his career. Five 3s in your first seven holes on the back nine with the tournament in the balance is a nice way to close a two-week stay in Hawaii.

"I anticipate needing another good score tomorrow", Kuchar said.

"Good, steady golf, " Kuchar said.

Kuchar became the first multiple victor on the PGA Tour this season, having ended a drought of more than four years when he captured the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico last November.

Kuchar ran off four birdies in five holes to start his second round on Friday, handled the par 5s at Waialae again and finished with another round 63.

He won the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico two months ago, another finish that was tighter than it needed to be. The other two were sloppy - a three-putt across the back of the fourth green, and a wedge into No. 5 that he was begging to get down as soon as it left his club. Tied for the lead with five holes to go, Putnam made bogey from the bunker on No. 14 and Kuchar birdied the next two holes to seize control. He holed out for eagle three times from the fairway - a sand wedge from 101 yards on No. 10 at the start of his round; a 9-iron from 149 yards on No. 16, and a gap wedge from 135 yards on No. 6.

Super-consistent Marc Leishman is on track for another big US PGA Tour payday but the Sony Open title appears nearly out of reach going into the final round.

He closed with a 68 and moved into the top 50 for the first time in his career. "I look forward to the rest of the year to try and continue to see how great this year can be".

"It's not often you feel like you know what you're doing with your swing and the ball's reacting the way you want it to and you're able to maneuver the ball the way you want", Kuchar told reporters. "I have to stay aggressive". He carded one under overall after rounds of 73 and a much-improved 66 in his first event of 2019.

Andrew Putnam finished four strokes back in second following his 68, while Marc Leishman (64), Hudson Swafford (64), Chez Reavie (67) and Corey Conners (64) all ended in a tie for third at 17-under.

Spieth had a 66 and missed the cut by just one shot. But, his standing atop the leaderboard was threatened by one-time victor Andrew Putnam.
