Harrington to captain Europe at 2020 Ryder Cup

Harrington was confirmed as Europe's captain for the biennial matchplay tournament on Tuesday, succeeding Thomas Bjorn, who skippered Europe as they regained the trophy in France past year.

Speaking about his experience at Le Golf National, Harrington said: "You are always learning and it was a nice balanced vice-captaincy with different personalities; some good emotions, some good thinkers".

Harrington has been a vice-captain in each of the last three editions after making six appearances as a player, four of which resulted in victories for Europe, and he has been charged with the responsibility of retaining the trophy in Wisconsin.

But Harrington, who was named European captain on Tuesday, is confident McIlroy will be available for selection in Whistling Straights next year as his team attempt to defend the trophy won in Paris in September. "I'm thrilled but it's not something I take on without a certain amount of trepidation".

"It really came down to whether I wanted to. put what is a successful career on the line", Harrington said. I know we're going to a new venue, an away match, we're going to have on average three more rookies coming in.

"I will try and bring that all together and hopefully say the right things at the right time and get the best out of that team that provides a winning performance".

He spent countless hours analysing all manner of statistics for his own team as well as the opposition, and he took Ryder Cup captaincy to a new level.

President Donald Trump tweets meme calling Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren '1/2020th'
Warren became emotional as she described her frustration at witnessing the Trump administration's border security policies. Trying to stick to her message, she said , "What 2020 is going to be about is not about my family".

He added: 'It's something I did think long and hard about.

Harrington has been encouraged by what he said was the "unanimous" support of Europe's players and former captains. He finished 2018 as the world's 191st-ranked player, his lowest end-of-year ranking since 2014, and it is likely to be even lower when the Ryder Cup rolls around. There will certainly be more pressure being a Ryder Cup captain, particularly on home soil, and I'm expecting Stricker to find out the difference first hand.

Harrington said he would not have taken the job if the event was going to a course similar to Hazeltine, where the U.S won 17-11 in 2016. "I am very much looking forward to taking on this role". Harrington, 47, is a six-time Ryder Cup participant.

"And having been a vice-captain three times, I realise how much work is behind the scenes in being a captain". "It's not something I went into lightly".

"I have reached the stage in my career where I enjoy playing golf", Harrington said. The most important job a Ryder captain faces is to be liked and trusted by his players. He's a good guy, well respected, and he's already enjoyed success as a team captain in the Presidents Cup.

"He is as European as they come".
