Amazon has sold more than 100 million Alexa-enabled devices in 2018. Today, in fact, Google revealed a seriously impressive number. Rather than including support for Amazon and Google's voice-controlled assistants in its TVs, Samsung is adding support for existing devices.

It expects that by the end of this month the Google Assistant will be available on one billion devices, Google stating in a blog post on Monday, noting that this is up from 500 million devices from May of a year ago. (Hello!) in a language spoken by more than 1.4 billion people of the most populous country in the world.

It is also probable that Amazon has sold more smart home devices than Google.

Rather than building the assistant software and associated hardware into its TVs, Samsung will require an existing Google Home or Amazon Echo device to power voice control.

There are now more than 150 different products that come with Amazon's Alexa built in, this number of course includes devices from third party manufacturers.

While not all the devices included in the 100 million figure are made by Amazon, it does emphasise the public's trust in the company's AI voice assistant, Alexa.

For a little perspective, Google says that Google Assistant was available on just 400 million devices this time a year ago, so it has seen a significant amount of growth since then. In the same time frame Google Assistant served up over 16 million recipes.

Along with Android smartphones, Google is also selling more devices that support Assistant. It isn't there quite yet, but Google anticipates that it will be by the end of this month.

Google won't need to rely on Android and Google Home to pull more people to Google Assistant forever, though, as Bronstein says that Google has plans to look to emerging markets for further Google Assistant integration.
