"I don't know what to say right now because Bianca gave me a hard time today".

Also, defending champion Julia Goerges saved a match point in the third set before beating Eugenie Bouchard 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6). I had an awesome week, I beat a lot of top players.

Andreescu, 18, won 11 games in a row on her way to a 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 6-3 win over Williams at the Auckland International.

Andreescu didn't relent with her attacking style, though, and it suddenly started to pay off as she raced away to take the second set 6-1. "I'm just really grateful". An injury-marred 2018 saw the young Canadian consolidate her Top 200 position with a 43-18 win-loss record in ITF tournaments and WTA qualifying, but she fell in the final round of qualifying at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon - the closest she came to a WTA-level main draw previous year.

But if there is one thing she is not lacking in it's belief.

Standing in the way of Goerges and a second straight Auckland crown is giant-killer Andreescu.

"I've actually had this cough for three weeks now so I'm used to it", Andreescu said.

Andreescu has dropped two sets: one to Laura Siegemund in the final qualifying round, and one to Venus Williams in the quarterfinals.

US Open champion Osaka failed to engineer a break point in the opening set but took six games in succession in the second before completing a 3-6 6-0 6-4 win.

Goerges clinched the second set in 45 minutes with a pivotal break in the 11th game, then took the deciding third set in only 23 minutes as Andreescu exhausted in her eighth match at the tournament.

Andreescu will have to attempt to qualify for the first Grand Slam of the season next week because her ranking does not get her in the main draw.
