Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he came out of a lunch with Trump feeling reassured about the Syria policy.

Arab states, including some that once backed rebels against President Bashar al-Assad, are seeking to reconcile with him after decisive gains by his forces in the war, aiming to expand their clout in Syria at the expense of non-Arab Turkey and Iran.

In Syria, about 2,000 USA soldiers operate alongside other foreign troops to assist local fighters battling Islamic State, a jihadist group that once held territory across much of Iraq and Syria and set up its own ultra-Islamist government.

"We're going to discuss the intense cooperation between Israel and the United States, which will also deal with the questions following the decision, the American decisions on Syria - on how to intensify even further our intelligence and operations cooperation in Syria and elsewhere to block Iranian aggression in the Middle East, to roll it back".

When he announced he was pulling troops from Syria, Trump said the withdrawal would be rapid.

"I didn't like the fact that they [YPG] are selling the small oil that they have to Iran", Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House in front of reporters. "I never said I'm getting out tomorrow".

"I don't want to be in Syria", Trump said on Wednesday, while adding that "I never said we're getting out tomorrow".

'ISIS is mostly gone, we're slowly sending our troops back home to be with their families, while at the same time fighting ISIS remnants, ' he said.

US-backed Kurdish militia has begun to withdraw from Manbij in northern Syria, inviting the Syrian army to move in as Turkey masses troops on the border. Garrett Marquis, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, stated, "Ambassador John Bolton will travel to Israel and Turkey in early January to discuss the deliberate and coordinated withdrawal of US forces from Syria, and increased cooperation with the Turkish military and other partners".

The immediate reason for Mattis's resignation was Trump's announcement that he's ordering United States troops out of Syria.

He said: "I shouldn't be popular in Europe". There is an argument that says we just pull up our stuff, go home, let the region run itself.

It is unclear whether the proof of a Kurdish pullout will deter Turkey from launching another military operation in Syria, but the government in Damascus has repeatedly said it views Turkish troops as invaders and will fight them if necessary.
