USA officials and at least one state said Friday that they have started investigations into a nationwide CenturyLink internet outage that has disrupted 911 service.

CRESA said it received reports from first responders in the field about individuals who were not aware of the outage or how to reach 911.

"Its breadth and duration are particularly troubling", he said.

Local police and county sheriff's departments have been answering distressed users on social media for the past few hours, giving out direct phone numbers to their local dispatchers.

But Friday, CenturyLink customers in Washington state and MA noted that the outages led to sporadic outages for 911 calls.

The outage began early in the day and continued into the evening.

The Federal Communications Commission has launched an investigation into the outage.

Telecommunications company CenturyLink tweeted Friday that it had been dealing with a "network event" and "all customer service" had been restored.

CenturyLink provides cell services to several carriers, including AT&T and Verizon - the outage didn't impact emergency calls from landlines.
