Laverne & Shirley star and renowned director Penny Marshall dies at 75

She was an associate producer on "Laverne & Shirley", the show created by her brother, Garry, starring Penny Marshall as the titular Laverne. She still had Renaissance Man, The Preacher's Wife, and Riding in Cars with Boys, but honestly, with a resume that included Big, Awakening, and A League of Their Own, Marshall should have been able to write her own ticket for much longer.

Marshall became a star with the hit series "Laverne & Shirley", which ran from 1976 to 1983.

In a 3-star review from famed film critic Roger Ebert about this game-changing film, he said, "Marshall shows her women characters in a tug-of-war between new images and old values, and so her movie is about transition - about how it felt as a woman suddenly to have new roles and freedom". She studied acting while supporting herself as a secretary - a role she would later play on "Happy Days". The medical drama, while not as successful at the box office, became only the second film directed by a woman nominated for best picture.

In contrast, Penny Marshall was not defined by her relationships, toxic or otherwise. Her first film as director was Jumpin' Jack Flash, a 1986 comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg. When it concluded, she launched directly into directing feature films, where she quickly made her mark.

Marshall occasionally acted in cameo roles including a memorable one in "Get Shorty".

Penny's performance as Laverne DeFazio earned her three Golden Globe nominations for best actress in a television series.

She married Reiner in 1971, and the pair divorced 10 years later. Reiner adopted Marshall's daughter, Tracy, whom she had during a previous marriage to athlete Michael Henry.

Goodbye, Penny. Man, did we laugh a lot!

In her 2012 book, My Mother Was Nuts, Marshall offered her reasoning for the popularity of the show: "I thought it was simply because Laverne and Shirley were poor and there were no poor people on TV, but there were plenty of them sitting at home and watching TV".

She was the sister of director-producer Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, Happy Days), who cast her as Laverne. "She had an instinct for that, and that's what her films represented". All that & always relaxed, amusing & totally unpretentious. "I will be forever grateful to her for letting me be a part of A League of Their Own". "I had always LOVED her work & now i loved her. RIP and thank you for ALL of it Penny". She was born with a great gift.

"She made the transition from sitcom star to A List movie director easily and had a major impact on both mediums", said Howard.
