Angela Ponce, Spain's Miss Universe hopeful and the pageant's first-ever transgender contestant, was unable to capture the crown on Sunday night - and she couldn't have cared less.

Despite the injury, Ashley continued to co-host Miss Universe until the end when she got to congratulate this year's victor, Miss Philippines, Catriona Gray. She said that this year's Miss Universe would be a victory for human rights.

"If my going through all this contributes to the world moving a little step forward, then that's a personal crown that will always accompany me", Ponce explained.

The organization has allowed transgender participation since 2012.

When asked on The Morning Show today if she had considered whether the controversy would impact on her chances of winning, Hung admitted that she had thought about it. She was selected by an all-female panel of judges, which included Monique Lhuillier and past Miss Universe winners.

She participated in the Miss World Spain 2015 pageant where she represented Cadiz.

"I only need to be here", she said.

Messages of support were pouring in Sunday on Twitter after Ponce's exit.
