Winter storm brings heavy snow, flight cancellations to Southeast

More than 200,000 people were without power on Sunday as a major winter storm pummeled parts of the Southern United States.

The National Weather Service says a "prolonged period of snow" was starting late Saturday and would last into Monday, with the heaviest snow expected in northwest North Carolina and southern Virginia.

The Virginia and North Carolina governors declared states of emergency, and asked their residents to be prepared for the possibility of more than a few days of slower travel and the possibility of power outages.

Even in the area just outside of D.C., many drivers found driving to be hard as the storm moved into the area around 5 p.m.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the sixth busiest airport in the country, said American Airlines reduced its operations, with more than 1,000 flights cancelled on Sunday.

In the Charlotte suburb of Matthews, a tree fell on a vehicle, causing the auto to careen and crash into a church, police said.

"North Carolina is in the cold icy grip of a mammoth winter storm", Gov. Roy Cooper said.

As of 4:30 a.m. Sunday, 2.5 inches of snow had fallen in the Greenville-Spartanburg area.

Most of SC didn't get a snow day, but the affects of the blizzard in North Carolina and Virginia are affecting Palmetto folks all the same.

The major winter storm that just pummeled the Southeast brought Whitetop, Virginia, two feet of snow, parts of West Virginia 20 inches, parts of North Carolina nearly 19 inches as double-digit totals were reported in South Carolina, Tennessee and as far west as Texas.

There were predictions that the storm could cause widespread blackouts, including several from the National Weather Service.

More than 1,700 flights were canceled, a lot of them in Charlotte, NC, which has already had the snowiest December in more than 20 years. He said that 11 shelters are open, mainly in western North Carolina, for people needing a place to stay.

The storm is expected to linger around throughout the day on Monday, but the worst is over, yet they are not in the clear just yet. In South Carolina, more than 225,600 customers have lost power. "We've brought in about a thousand line crews and tree crews from as far away as the Midwest", said Jeff Brooks.

The Greenville-Spartanburg area of SC is covered with ice, rendering road conditions especially risky.

Asheville Regional Airport had also reported about 9.8 inches of snow by Sunday morning, contributing to flight cancelations throughout the affected areas.

Officials warned residents to prepare emergency kits and stay off roads in impacted areas.
