Trump to nominate State Department spokeswoman as next United Nations ambassador

President Trump will reportedly announce State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as his pick to succeed Nikki Haley in the role of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Nauert's nomination had been rumoured for weeks, and she had started handing over some of her responsibilities as spokeswoman to her deputy, Robert Palladino.

ABC News reported in November that Nauert had been offered the job, but it was not clear at the time whether she had accepted.

While Nauert struggled during the tenure of former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson - so ostracized from his inner circle that she considered quitting - she could now bring to the United Nations close ties to the White House and a good working relationship with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The White House views the former Fox News host as a capable advocate for the Trump administration's foreign policy, who could replace outgoing UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, media report said. Nauert beat out other contenders for the position including: former White House advisor Dina Powell, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft, and U.S. Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell.

Nauert joined the administration in 2017 after several years as an anchor on Fox News, and has quickly moved up the ranks, joining Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's inner circle, according to Bloomberg.

She will need to win Senate confirmation to assume the role.

If she wins Senate confirmation, Nauert will face a broad agenda at the United Nations topped by the need to maintain worldwide sanctions on North Korea. Trump is a regular viewer and one time guest of the show, and Nauert herself has developed a close relationship with Trump's daughter Ivanka.
