Haslam's office announced Monday the Republican will attend the invitation-only funeral service on Wednesday at Washington National Cathedral.

Bush died at his Houston home on Friday at age 94.

Haslam had previously ordered all flags over state buildings and the Tennessee Statehouse be lowered to half-staff until sunset on December 30 to honor Bush's life. The casket will return to Texas for a funeral Thursday afternoon at his presidential library in College Station.

The two-year-old Sully has been at Bush's side since June, just weeks after the death of the president's wife Barbara, to whom he was married for 73 years.

Trump has ordered the federal government to close on Wednesday and both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed in observance.

Bush was eulogized during a Capitol ceremony by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who called him "a humble servant who loved his fellow citizens", and a "principled leader who knew America not only guards our own future, but also safeguards democracy for the world".

In Washington, Bush will lie in state in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol from Monday at 7:30 p.m. EST until Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. EST. He would go on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations and China, head of the Central Intelligence Agency and chairman of the Republican National Committee before being elected to two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president.
