- The search for a Florida woman, missing for a week in Costa Rica, has come to a tragic end. The last time Burton spoke to Stefaniak, she told her that it was raining insane and the power went out. The next day, Stefaniak failed to show up for her flight home and hasn't been heard from since. In what is believed to be the last conversation she had, she told a friend the property was too secluded to leave in the dark, but she was thirsty and was going to the guard shack to ask for water. The woman said that "it's pretty sketchy here", Burton said. There, she Facetimed a friend from NY, telling him she was thirsty and was going to find a drink. Burton returned to Tampa last Tuesday, but Stefaniak was scheduled to head back the following day.

The body was found Monday near a rental home where Carla Stefaniak stayed.

During an exclusive interview with ABC Action News, Stefaniak's father, Carlos, said his heart shattered when he saw her body. It had gathered some $11,200 by the time authorities announced her death.

The body was found covered in plastic bags near an Airbnb apartment that was rented by Ms Stefaniak, who went missing almost a week ago.

An autopsy completed Tuesday determined the body initially matches Stefaniak, but investigators still need to complete a final verification, said Walter Espinoza of the country's Judicial Investigation Department.

An avid user of social media, Stefaniak stopped all communication the night she checked into the Airbnb. Ms Stefaniak had planned to fly back to the USA the following day but never arrived for her flight.
