Huawei chief financial officer arrested in Canada

Wanzhou Meng, Huawei's chief financial officer, was arrested in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada today.

Huawei Technologies Co.'s chief financial officer was arrested in Canada over potential violations of US sanctions on Iran, provoking outrage from China and complicating thorny trade negotiations just as they enter a critical juncture.

Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's global chief financial officer and the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested while transiting at an unspecified airport in Canada, the company said in a statement on its website. A bail hearing has been set for Friday.

A statement released from the company said that Meng was being detained by Canadian authorities to face "unspecified charges" in the Eastern District of NY.

"The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the USA and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou". "The company believes the Canadian and United States legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", a spokesperson for the company said.

Shenzhen-based Huawei is the latest Chinese tech firm to be targeted for violating USA sanctions.

Sources previously told Reuters that U.S. authorities had been investigating Huawei for allegedly shipping products to Iran in breach of U.S. sanctions.

Huawei is the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer, and one of China's largest tech firms.

Huawei has not responded to Global News' request for comment.

The arrest, while notable, did not come out of the blue.

News of Meng's arrest provoked an immediate protest from the Chinese embassy in Canada, demanding the USA and its neighbor "rectify wrongdoings" and free Meng.

It comes amid deepening suspicions of Huawei in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

In 2012, the House of Representatives released a report warning Huawei poses a national security threat to the USA, and American companies and its government should avoid doing business with the company. And perhaps more importantly, US officials have urged other countries to ban telecom companies from purchasing Huawei equipment. Huawei has said neither it nor Skycom ultimately provided the HP equipment.

In 2011, the American government stopped Huawei from purchasing USA server technology company 3Leaf's assets, for national security reasons.

The U.S.is anxious about the extent to which Chinese-made equipment is used in the telecommunications sectors of countries that host American military bases.
