Trump hopes for US-N.Korea summit in early 2019

President Donald Trump said a second summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un will likely take place in January or February.

Last month, Vice President Mike Pence said the USA will not require North Korea to provide a full list of its nuclear and missile sites before Trump meets Kim again.

On Friday, Mr. Trump discussed the situation with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

"It was also agreed that great progress has been made with respect to North Korea and that President Trump, together with President Xi, will strive, along with Chairman Kim Jong Un, to see a nuclear free Korean Peninsula", the White House said in a statement following the highly anticipated dinner in Argentina.

The president tells reporters that there are three sites under consideration, but he's not identifying them.

On November 7, the State Department announced that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's meeting with Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee, which had been scheduled for November 8 in NY, would "take place at a later date".

When asked about a future meeting, Mr. Trump said: "I think we're going to do one fairly [soon] - into January, February, I think".

North Korea had been angered by Washington's refusal to ease sanctions and has warned it could resume development of its nuclear program if the United States did not drop its campaign.

- Kim visit to Seoul this year?

But differences have emerged between Washington and Seoul on how to proceed with Mr. Kim, as the dovish Mr. Moon has long favoured engagement with the North.

Despite the warming ties, it remains unclear whether Kim will make his first-ever visit to the South this year, as Seoul is hoping. The North Korean leader had pledged to come to the South Korean capital during his most recent summit meeting with Moon in Pyongyang in September.

Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One on his return from Argentina, tells reporters that he and Kim are "getting along very well" and have a "good relationship".

Moon's top press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, was quoted by Yonhap news agency saying that Trump "asked that South Korea and the USA closely cooperate so the next summit will be another historical milestone in the process of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula".
