Mueller: Manafort Has Lied To Investigators Since Plea Deal

In a court filing on Monday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller declared that President Donald Trump's former Campaign Chair Paul Manafort has violated his plea deal with federal prosecutors by lying multiple times to the FBI. The pardon hope may very well be what Manafort's driving at and it could occur, but we also have to ask what all of this does for Mueller. The accusation implies that Manafort has acted in violation of his plea agreement with the government in September which required him to "fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly" cooperate with the government's investigation.

Through his attorneys, Manafort denied lying, saying he "believes he provided truthful information" during a series of sessions with Mueller's investigators.

The former Trump campaign manager knew about the infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting attended by Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Manafort himself and a lawyer with ties to the Kremlin who claimed to have dirt on Trump's presidential rival Hillary Clinton.

Deadlocked charges from the previous trial were to be dismissed if there was "successful co-operation" with the special counsel.

Mr Mueller said Mr Manafort "committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters, which constitute breaches of the agreement".

In the plea deal, Manafort plead guilty to conspiracy against the US and obstruction of justice, related to allegations of witness tampering.

CNN's Don Lemon hosted a panel discussion to explain the latest unraveling into Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the 2016 Russian Federation probe.

While the Manafort document detailing lies won't be an "indictment", it is nonetheless an opportunity for Mueller to put together an extensive narrative that will become a part of public record.

Manafort, a longtime Republican political consultant ran the Trump campaign.

They did not elaborate on what Manafort lied about. Except for one aspect of their bank fraud case, in which Manafort appeared to dangle access to the Trump campaign in exchange for a bank loan, the cases did not publicly describe Manafort's work as campaign chairman. Kilimnik, though also charged by Mueller, has not surfaced in the USA court system. Sentencing in that case is scheduled for February 8.

Under an agreement with prosecutors, Manafort faces a maximum prison sentence of about 10 years, not counting a sentence for his August conviction in Virginia for bank and tax fraud. With a circumstance like this, only one side of the deal gets torn up - and that's the prosecutors' promises of mercy, they said in the filing Monday.
