American Man Believed Killed by Isolated Tribe on Indian Island

An American tourist was allegedly killed by a protected tribe in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Wednesday.

The American was identified as 27-year-old John Allen Chau.

Its members are describe as the most risky tribe in the world, and are also believed to have killed two fishermen who illegally entered their island in 2006. The police in the islands arrested the fishermen and questioned the preacher after the United States officials informed them of the incident, reported NDTV.

The local police are investigating the case, citing "unknown tribesmen" as the suspects.

Chau was hit by a hail of arrows as soon as he set foot on the island, an official source told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Chau had paid the local fishermen to take him to North Sentinel Island, which is a home to Sentinelese (also known as Sentineli).

His body was recovered the following day by the fishermen on their return.

The Sentinelese, numbering fewer than 50 in all, have always attacked those approaching the islands.

No one knows exactly how many Sentinelese live on North Sentinel Island.

The Sentinelese people live on the small forested island and are known to resist all contact with outsiders, often attacking anyone who comes near.

Chau had made several trips to the Andaman islands recently before finally managing to make it to the remote stretch by offering money to local fishermen.

In January 2006, two fishermen were killed by Sentinelese people after their boat accidentally drifted too close to North Sentinel Island. The Indian government maintains a three-mile exclusion zone around the island to protect the tribe there.

A source said: "He tried to reach the Sentinel island on November 14 but could not make it".

As any contact with the isolated tribe is forbidden, Mr Chau's killers cannot be prosecuted.

"Instead, a few months ago the authorities lifted one of the restrictions that had been protecting the Sentinelese tribe's island from foreign tourists, which sent exactly the wrong message, and may have contributed to this awful event".
