Democrat Abrams ends bid to become Georgia governor

Republican Brian Kemp will be the next governor of Georgia, with Democrat Stacey Abrams admitting Friday afternoon that there was no path to victory, following a bitter 10-day battle since Election Day. Abrams, however, stressed she's not conceding.

The Abrams campaign has almost three dozen lawyers working on the potential case and considering other legal options.

Georgia authorities say a senator arrested at a state Capitol demonstration over uncounted election ballots was charged with obstruction because she helped create "a human wall" that hindered police. "And I will not concede because the erosion of our democracy is not right". That puts him about 18,000 votes above the threshold required to win by a majority and avoid a December 4 runoff. "But to watch an elected official who claims to represent the people in this state baldly pin his hopes for election on suppression of the people's democratic right to vote has been truly appalling". She received more than 1.9 million votes - more than Barack Obama got in Georgia during either of his campaigns for the presidency.

"So let's be clear - this is not a speech of concession, because concession means to acknowledge an action is right, true or proper", she said.

His victory will keep the Georgia governor's mansion in GOP hands for a fifth consecutive term and demoralize Democrats who hoped to put the state on the presidential map in 2020. "The campaign is over, and Kemp's focus is on building a safer, stronger future for Georgia families", Kemp campaign spokesman Ryan Mahoney said.

Stacey Abrams, who aimed to become America's first black governor, said Friday she will not win her race to lead the state of Georgia, as she sharply accused her Republican rival of voter suppression.

Abrams, meanwhile, sent volunteers across the state in search of voters whose ballots were rejected.

Mr Kemp's campaign, which has repeatedly called on Ms Abrams to concede, repeated that call, saying Ms Abrams and her supporters have used "fake vote totals", "desperate press conferences" and "dangerous lawsuits" to try to steal the election. The Kemp lead Abrams50/48, and that never really was chipped away in the days after Election Day.

All of that is playing out against the backdrop of Kemp's unabashed embrace of President Donald Trump's nationalism. "This new PAC will pursue accountability in Georgia's elections and integrity in the process of maintaining our voting rolls".

If she is able to do so, and a judge feels there is reasonable doubt that the election results could have been different had interference and irregularities not had taken place, then he/she could declare that the election was invalid and a new vote could be called. Cindy Hyde-Smith of MS is headed to a November 27 runoff against Democrat Mike Espy after neither candidate secured a majority of the vote in a four-way race. She said Abrams' team doesn't have a list of 18,000 disenfranchised voters. Trump won Georgia by five percentage points in 2016, but Democrats' increasing strength in the suburbs bodes well for their chances in future statewide races.
