The State Department said early on Wednesday that the meeting had been postponed, but gave no reason, raising concerns that talks aimed at persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear arms could break down.

Trump's remarks came hours after the State Department announced a postponement of Thursday's meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, a senior adviser to the North Korean leader.

At the State Department on Wednesday, deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino said the postponement "is purely a scheduling issue".

Trump has teased the possibility of a second summit with the young North Korean leader, saying last month that he expected the meeting would take place after Tuesday's midterms.

In a statement, it added, "Ongoing conversations continue to take place", but did not elaborate.

Pompeo said earlier that he plans to discuss with his counterpart the North Korean leader's promise to allow worldwide inspectors into the nuclear testing site in Punggye-ri and the missile engine testing site in Dongchang-ri to verify their dismantlement.

In addition to Pompeo's talks with his counterpart, the NY meeting in NY was expected to be the first between Trump's special North Korean envoy, Stephen Biegun, and his counterpart, Choe Son Hui.

"We think it's going fine".

The two leaders agreed to work toward the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" when they met for the first time on June 12 in Singapore.

On Sunday, Pompeo said he was "not worried" about the North Korean demands and insisted there would be "no economic relief until we have achieved our ultimate objective".

But the growing divide between the US and South Korea also has many concerned, as liberal President Moon Jae-in pushes for closer Korean ties including demilitarizing the border and increasing economic cooperation.

It will be the second meeting between Pompeo and Kim in NY.

Last week, the North's foreign ministry threatened to return to Pyongyang's former policy of "byeongjin", which calls for simultaneously developing its nuclear program and economy, if the us did not start lifting sanctions. He visited NY in May for talks with Pompeo in what was the highest-level trip by a North Korean to the United States in almost two decades.

"I would love to take the sanctions off, but they have to be responsive too". It followed Moscow's move to ban the adoption of a report by UNSC panel on restrictions against North Korea, the so-called 1718 Sanctions Committee, until some changes are introduced to it.
