Equinor 'resumes operations' after shutdown at Sture following tanker collision

The frigate was returning from a NATO military exercise when it collided with a tanker which left Equinor's Sture oil terminal with a cargo of North Sea crude.

Returning from Nato's Trident Juncture exercise, KNM Helge Ingstad frigate collided with the Sola TS oil tanker, Norwegian Royal Army confirmed.

The Norwegian frigate KNM %3CI%3EHelge Ingstad%3C/I%3E takes on water after a collision with the Maltese-flagged tanker %3CI%3ESola TS%3C/I%3E on 8 November 2018 in the Hjeltefjord near Bergen, Norway. Seven people were slightly injured.

The 62,000-ton tanker suffered minor damages and was towed to the terminal.

Johan Marius Ly of the Norwegian Coast Guard said the 442ft frigate, which had recently taken part in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation drill Trident Juncture, was listing, adding: "We have been told that there is a leak from the frigate".

Oil output from the fields delivering to the Sture terminal was around 350,000 barrels per day in August, the latest data available from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate showed.

Coast guard deputy director Johan Marius Ly said helicopter fuel has leaked from the frigate.

"It took on a lot of water and there is a real danger that it sinks where it is", an official for the Sola rescue centre told AFP.

The ship had previously been part of an escort convoy which seized chemical weapons from Syria back in 2013.

The frigate lost power and control after the crash Sola, and the ship was pushed by tugboats into shallow water where it can't fully sink.

The company said "the sture terminal and Kollsnes plant resumed operations Thursday afternoon after being shut down in connection with the collision". Both Norway's Accident Investigation Board and Malta's Marine Safety Investigation Unit will investigate the collision, as the tanker was registered in Malta.
