Lion Air Plane Smashes Into Pole In Indonesia Week After Fatal Crash

The jet reported a discrepancy in its angle of attack sensor during a flight from Bali to Jakarta the day before it crashed.

Images distributed on social media showed passengers on the runway observing the broken part of the plane.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an airworthiness directive on Boeing 737 Max aircrafts on Wednesday in light of the October 29 crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max jet that killed all 189 passengers.

Signs appear to point to an instrument failure in the brand-new Boeing 737 Max, specifically the angle-of-attack sensor, which is critical to determining the amount of lift generated by the wings.

USA aviation regulators said they are drafting an order requiring that airlines follow Boeing's instructions.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source told Reuters that the Boeing bulletin related only to the 737 MAX, of which there are just over 200 in service. Erroneous readings from the AOA sensor could push the plane into an aggressive, unwarranted dive.

The captain and first officer flying from Bali to Jakarta the night before the crash had indicators displaying differences in angle of 20 degrees, KNKT said, but that flight landed safely despite the issues in the air.

While the ultimate cause of the crash is still under investigation, Boeing has previously provided guidance on how pilots should deal with extreme nose down incidents. Such bulletins are routinely issued by aircraft and engine manufacturers, particularly in the wake of major events, and this one does little except to remind crews that the procedures for addressing this situation already exist. The committee said the pilots were dealing with an erroneous airspeed indication.

"Any action that the FAA would take regarding that incident would have to wait until we have findings", agency acting Administrator Daniel Elwell said Monday after a speaking engagement in Washington.

"If the nose is trimmed down on an aircraft, it becomes hard for the crew to hold it", said a person briefed on Boeing's bulletin, SeattleTimes reported.

Boeing said it is cooperating fully and providing technical assistance as the investigation continues.

Boeing has sent 219 737 MAX jets to customers globally, with 4,564 orders for jets yet to be delivered.

The two-month-old Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed into the sea 13 minutes after take-off from Jakarta.

Indonesian accident investigators said on Monday that an airspeed indicator on the crashed jet was damaged for its last four flights, but USA authorities responded cautiously to suggestions of fleet-wide checks.

Bloomberg says the plane's velocity was uncharacteristically high, possibly touching speeds of 970 kilometres an hour as it hit the water.
