Attorney General Jeff Sessions is Out. Here’s What Could Happen Next

"There is some confusion among stupid people as to whether Sessions was sacked or resigned", Colbert said.

The Associated Press and Fox News reported that Sessions, who was an early Trump supporter during the 2016 election and wore a "Make America Great Again" hat at a rally, submitted his resignation letter to Trump, ending his two-year tenure as head of the Department of Justice. President Trump tweeted the news, writing, "We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!"

Trump announced in a tweet that Sessions's chief of staff Matt Whitaker would become the new acting attorney general.

He also said on CNN past year that he could see a scenario in which Sessions' replacement doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt".

"I am committed to leading a fair Department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans", Whitaker said.

The Justice Department has the ultimate authority over Mueller's investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election and interactions between Trump associates and Russian officials.

Moreover, a statement from the DOJ suggested that Whitaker would now be overseeing the Mueller investigation until a new nominee is confirmed, as he has not recused himself from doing so.

After the special counsel was appointed in May 2017, Trump also channeled his fury toward Sessions, accusing him of "disloyalty."

Sources told Fox News on Wednesday that Whitaker is expected to oversee the Russian Federation investigation, although his eligibility to do so will have to be determined by Department of Justice ethics officials. Trump belittled Sessions but, perhaps following the advice of aides, held off on firing him.

Recent acting and permanent attorneys general have been longtime government lawyers or high-ranking politicians with more experience navigating Washington than Whitaker.

He has also publicly mused how one might go about eviscerating the Mueller investigation without formally disbanding the whole operation.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer immediately called on Whitaker to recuse himself from the probe as his predecessor had, "given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations" on it.

Whitaker wrote that Trump is "absolutely correct" that Mueller investigating the finances of Trump and his family as part of the investigation would cross a line.

Sessions' ousting will likely tarnish the integrity of the ongoing Mueller investigation in the eyes of many Democrats and Republicans alike, and Whitaker can even technically fire the special counsel if there is "cause."
