In a historic result on couple of seats in the US midterm polls, Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib and Somali-American Ilhan Omar have become the first Muslim women elected to US Congress.

"I ran because of injustices and because of my boys, who are questioning their (Muslim) identity and whether they belong", Tlaib said in an US television interview in August.

She said her political life began attending local Democratic Farmer Labor party caucuses with her grandfather after arriving in the US.

"I chose to run because I was one of many people I knew who really wanted to demonstrate what representative democracies are supposed to be", she said.

She has stated that President Donald Trump's "politics of fear" motivated her to run for the seat.
