U.S. service member killed in apparent insider attack in Afghanistan

Brent Taylor, a married father of seven children who was deployed to Afghanistan in January, was a former mayor of North Ogden, a city of about 17,000 people located about 46 miles north of Salt Lake City.

'The strong turnout, despite the attacks and challenges, was a success for the long-suffering people of Afghanistan and for the cause of human freedom, ' he wrote last week. "He was there to say, 'What can we do to help them help themselves?'"

"He always wanted to give back and make the world a better place", Cox said in a telephone interview Saturday night.

Taylor's last Facebook post touched on how inspired he had been by the elections in Afghanistan, as he encouraged people in the U.S. to vote on Tuesday.

The motive for the shooting - the second insider attack at a base against foreign troops in less than two weeks - was not immediately clear. He was also the mayor of North Ogden, Utah. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
