‘Father of Taliban’ Maulana Samiul Haq Assassinated in Rawalpindi

Maulana Samiul Haq, known as the godfather of Taliban, succumbed to injuries on late Friday evening after sustaining a gruesome knife attack in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

As per the details, Maulana Samiul Haq sustained injuries in a targeted attack at his house in a private housing society in Rawalpindi's Gulraiz area.

According to Pakistani media, Maulana Hamidul Haq, the son of the JUI-S chief, said his father was stabbed to death while he was resting in his room.

Haq's killing has come when religio-political parties in Pakistan are protesting on the streets against the Supreme Court's decision to acquit Asia Bibi.

Haq, a former senator, was the leader of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Sami.

Yousaf Shah, Haq's spokesman, said the attacker's identity and their motive were not immediately known. The army chief also extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

Prime minister Khan addressed the nation through a video message and his address was exclusively focused on the Asia Bibi verdict. Islamists in Pakistan's largest city of Karachi and in the northwestern city of Peshawar were also gathering for the protests .

In a statement, the prime minister directed the authorities concerned to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility behind the assassination of Maulana Samiul Haq.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has also denounced the assassination and sought a report from the Inspector General Punjab Police. Haq had also served as a member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997.

However, initial reports had said that Haq had been shot.

Former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal said the bad news of the assassination was very tragic.

"The martyrdom of Maulana is a big tragedy", he said, adding that Maulana had met Prime Minister Imran Khan 15 days ago as part of government's efforts to introduce modern education in seminaries.
