Special counsel Mueller's team asks Federal Bureau of Investigation to probe 'false claims' against him

A weird and convoluted story involving Robert Mueller, two right-wing personalities, and a woman who "doesn't exist", has resulted in the special counsel asking the Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into allegations that "women were offered money to make false claims" about him, and "right-wing Twitter troll" Jacob Wohl accusing the media of conducting a "coordinated smear campaign" against Mueller.

Conservative media personality and lobbyist Jack Burkman, who was referenced in the unsolicited email from the alleged Florida woman, said on Twitter that he planned to convene the news conference to announce sexual misconduct allegations against Mueller.

A woman who says she was approached by a man named Bill, "who had a British accent", and who claimed to work for Burkman, sent an email detailing the scheme to several reporters in recent days.

Jack Burkman, a lawyer and Republican operative who has in the past promoted right-wing conspiracies on social media, told Reuters he was speaking to five women who claimed they were sexually assaulted by Mueller, and denied paying them for the information.

Wohl is allegedly involved in an attempted plot to smear Robert Mueller - who is now investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election- orchestrated by Republican lobbyist Jack Burkman. He added: "Robert Mueller is a bad guy not just because of what he does inside the courtroom, but because of what he does outside the courtroom". In fact, all the people listed on LinkedIn as Surefire employees have profile photographs of other people - some famous, like Waltz or Israeli model Bar Refaeli - as previously reported by Bellingcat, an investigative website.

"There are also very serious allegations against Jacob Wohl".
