Verstappen dominated practice and looked primed to become the youngest pole sitter in F1 history.

"I think we are able to run the vehicle in its optimum state and we've got a power unit that this weekend looks competitive relative to the others". "We hadn't had the cleanest run through practice and I just knew putting the lap together would be crucial as always", said Ricciardo, who whooped in delight as he realised what he had done.

Max Verstappen fumed that his Red Bull vehicle let him down as team-mate Daniel Ricciardo stole pole position in Mexico.

"The engines are struggling for air, the brakes, the cooling. we're running the same wing as (slow and twisty) Monaco and we've got the same downforce as (high-speed) Monza", said Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

"Those guys (Red Bull) are in a league of their own", he said.

"That's as good as I could get but I'm really happy for Daniel, he's done a great job so congratulations to him and of course, being behind the Red Bulls is not a bad thing". Vettel and Hamilton came to blows on the opening lap of last year's race in Mexico, and with the Red Bulls on the front row, with the two title contenders just behind, Turn 1 on Sunday could be the best of the year so far. It's been a while since I've had a good weekend in general.

Ferrari's Vettel, now 70 points behind the Briton, has to win to have any mathematical chance of denying Hamilton the crown.

"To be as close as I am, I'm really quite happy with that, and to be on third, it's not a bad start", he said.

"We tried to make the best of it and I thought it was going to be enough for pole with the problems we had".

"We had a hard day yesterday and today was a big improvement".

In recent weeks, Ricciardo has been beset with a raft of auto issues, with his early retirement from last weekend's U.S. Grand Prix leading Horner to question why Renault was continuing to allow his run of reliability issues given his imminent move from Red Bull in 2019.

"Obviously dropping back to fourth from second is not satisfying, but we will see what we can do tomorrow".

Asked if Red Bull can fix the problems they've experienced before tomorrow, Verstappen added: "I'm not sure but I'll try". "It's a long race, I think it will be decided over strategy and tyres".
