That's one reason some expect Washington to try to help Saudi Arabia find a way out of the political mess it faces over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.

Details of the attack on Khashoggi have started to emerge based on recordings allegedly obtained by Turkish authorities from inside the consulate, including of a Saudi autopsy doctor reportedly telling others to listen to music to ease the tension as they dismembered the body.

Khashoggi has not been seen since he entered the Saudi consult in Istanbul more than two weeks ago and is feared dead. Mr Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October, to pick up paperwork that would allow him to marry his fiancée Hatice Cengiz.

'We'll be making a statement, a very strong statement'.
