World gets 'Banksy-ed' after painting self-destructs at auction

Girl With a Balloon (2006), which appeared to shred itself as the gavel banged down on the final lot of the night, has been designated a new work altogether, with Banksy renaming it Love Is In the Bin (2018). In 2013, he established a booth in a NY market where he sold his original works for $60 (N21,810).

The anonymous graffiti artist's painting Girl With A Balloon self-destructed after being sold for more than £1 million at Sotheby's, dropping through a shredder in its frame.

"When the hammer came down last week and the work was shredded, I was at first shocked, but gradually I began to realize that I would end up with my own piece of art history", she said, according to the auction house.

"The post was captioned: "'The urge to destroy is also a creative urge' - Picasso".

"It appears we just got Banksy-ed", Alex Branczik, Sotheby's director of contemporary art in Europe, said.

Just after the painting was sold on October 5 for 1.04 million pounds ($1.37 million), an alarm sounded and then the canvas began sliding through the bottom of the frame, emerging in shreds as those in attendance watched in disbelief.

It passed through a shredder seemingly built into the frame which held it.

Auctioneers have promised no more stunts as they look to sell off Slave Labour, which features a young boy creating bunting at a sewing machine. He also added to the swirling debate by suggesting auction house Sotheby's may have been a party to the whole escapade, pointing to oddities about how the work was displayed and why they did not pick up on the work's unusually thick frame.

This leaves unanswered questions as people do not believe that a painting will stay that long with a shredder in it with nothing going wrong with the mechanism of the shredder after such a long time. Sotheby's employees were stunned at the incredible Banksy stunt.

Shortly after, a man is seen being escorted out of the room.
