Thomas Bjorn: Europe do not fear revitalised Tiger Woods at Ryder Cup

The 42-year-old Woods had not won since August 2013, but claimed his 80th PGA Tour title after a one-over 71 in the final round to finish at 11-under 269.

The 42-year-old, 14-time major victor carded a one-over 71 at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Course to claim the 80th PGA Tour title of his glittering career.

Woods, who returned in January after missing nearly the entire previous two years with a debilitating back injury, held a three-shot advantage heading into the final round. But his struggles have dated back to the highly public unraveling of his marriage and private life almost nine years ago.

Woods, who was two clear of compatriot Billy Horschel, said: 'I was having a hard time not crying on that last hole.

The American icon is convinced fellow American Woods is good enough to target another four or five majors over the next decade after ending his five-year title drought in stunning style to lift the Tour Championship on Sunday. "Am I going to be able to sit, stand, walk, lay down without feeling the pain that I was in".

Playing partner Rory McIlroy likened Woods's chaotic victory march up the final fairway with fans spilling onto the Atlanta course chanting Woods's name to Jack Nicklaus's 1980 US Open win at Baltusrol. "I just didn't know if I could ever piece together a golf swing". Asked if his lack of Ryder Cup wins bothers him, Woods told a news conference. "I think the world of golf is really proud of you, and is super excited about your game and the way the game of golf is going".

Woods won't go out five times for the US side in Paris this year like McIlroy did that year, but his victory could similarly be a launching off point for a USA team that was sent screaming into France with a preposterous sendoff from the 18th green at East Lake on Sunday evening.

While many had doubted if Woods would ever be competitive again, he sent a convincing message that he is indeed back.

The 14 time major victor was literally mobbed by a multitude of excited golf fans as he sealed his first tour victory in five years.

"Some of the players I saw after on the 18th green knew what I was struggling with and it was really special to see them there".

"Not that this event needs more energy brought to it - it's probably the biggest, the grandest event in all of golf - but it [Woods' win] will add that much more excitement, I believe". During the tournament, he put out a series of tweets that culminated with him catching up with Tiger after the victory.

Fleetwood went on to call Woods' victory "the greatest comeback of all time". As the Ryder Cup gears up this week, golf fans will undoubtedly find themselves glued to the TV when Tiger is competing.

With a huge crowd following him from hole to hole, Woods said he had to try not to cry as he completed the win.

"You might ask a couple of people what they think about different things, but I'm happy with where I am as a captain and how I can lead these 12 players", he said".
