"Better Late Than Never": Congress On India Cancelling Talks With Pak

India has called off a planned meeting between its foreign minister and her Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly session in NY this month, aggravating tensions between the longtime rivals.

The MEA spokesperson referred to the "killing of Indian security forces" allegedly by "Pakistani entities" and Islamabad's decision to release stamps allegedly "glorifying terrorists" as the reasons behind the cancellation of talks.

"The decision to agree to Pakistan's proposal for a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries in NY later this month was in response to the spirit reflected in the letters from the new Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan", Friday's Indian statement said.

He said that the Pakistan army, its spy agency ISI and Kashmir-based separatists backed by them appear to be working to vitiate the atmosphere.

The leader tweeted the remarks after India cancelled a meeting between the country's foreign ministers, planned for the fringe of the UN General Assembly meeting later this month. One of the issues that will come up during the discussions is India's demand for Pakistan to open up the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara corridor for Sikh pilgrims from the Indian state of Punjab.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, however, rejected the Modi government's allegations and said that it is inappropriate to cancel talks under the media's pressure.

The foreign ministry in New Delhi blamed the about-face on recent actions that had revealed Pakistan's "evil agenda" and the "true face" of Khan, who hit back on Twitter Saturday.

Pakistan Prime Minister's reaction has come almost 24 hours after Inda's called off the proposed foreign ministry-level talks with Pakistan blaming the country for the killing of three soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district.

The Indian decision to attend the meeting was made after Khan wrote to India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, and called for a resumption of talks between the nuclear-armed rival nations.

"It seems that India is already preparing for its elections due in the country next year", Qureshi was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune.

Reiterating that Pakistan had asked for talks in the greater interest of the region, he added that a "clique" in New Delhi was averse to talks. India has maintained that talks and terror do not go hand in hand.

He said the world should see that "Pakistan has held a positive outlook towards the situation while India's attitude has not been so forthcoming".

Fawad said, "We invited Kapil Dev, Navjot Sidhu and Gwaskar and Navjot Sidhu came to Pakistan and what is happening to him in India, it is before everybody".

"We said that we want dialogue - but in a dignified manner", he added.
