Del Potro rues lack of killer instinct in US Open defeat

Novak Djokovic sealed his third US Open title and 14th Grand Slam overall, levelling Pete Sampras for third place on the career list, with an immaculate display against Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday.

Now that Novak Djokovic has the same number of Grand Slam titles as his childhood idol, Pete Sampras, it's realistic for him to start thinking about chasing the only two men ahead of him, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Asked if he had a greater appreciation for winning slams after a hectic few years, Djokovic said on ESPN: "I do". Roger Federer of Switzerland has 20 Grand Slam titles and Spain's Rafael Nadal has 17 singles' Grand Slam trophies to his name.

Novak Djokovic wrapped up his great summer with an impressive performance in the US Open men's final against Juan Martin del Potro.

But del Potro can take heart in appearing in a first major final since 2009, when he upset Federer in five sets. Del Potro then held at love and had chances for another break on his next opportunity before Djokovic finally held to end a 22-point game that lasted more than 20 minutes.

The second set immediately saw the Argentine under pressure on his serve, and though he managed to fend off Djokovic in game one, the relentless pressure told in game three as Del Potro sprayed two forehand errors to lose serve again.

Del Potro had a 3-1 lead in the tiebreaker before Djokovic recovered to take it.

He added: "I would like to congratulate Juan Martin".

"I've been - during all my career - learning with Novak, Roger, Rafa, seeing them winning these events very often".

Forgive the Pittsburgh Steelers if they're not quite sure what to make of their 21-21 tie against Cleveland in the season opener. The well-rested Eagles play at Tampa Bay, a team that over-delivered at New Orleans with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback.

Del Potro has a fervent support at the US Open and was backed by a noisy support as thousands of Argentine fans descended on the Arthur Ashe Stadium wearing their national colours of light blue and white.

This was Djokovic's third championship in NY, along with those in 2011 and 2015. He lost a set in two of his first three matches.

While the scoreline suggested a comfortable evening for Djokovic, the Serbian was still made to work hard and had to produce some of his best and most consistent tennis.

"I have utmost respect for what they have achieved on the court, but also the champions, role models, they are off the court". I had my opportunities during the second and third set but I was playing nearly at the limit all the time ... and I couldn't make it because Novak was there every time.

This time previous year Djokovic was injured and uncertain about his future direction.

He said: "I think I did a good tournament, but this is a tough loss for me".

This is Djokovic's second straight grand slam singles title this season following Wimbledon 2018.

Last year is the only time in the last eight years he failed to pick-up at least one major trophy in a season.
