Barack Obama returns to campaign trail, but will he succeed?

The former President questioned the GOP's approach to foreign policy, including its position on Russian Federation, challenging climate change science, and embracing of conspiracy theories including those "surrounding Benghazi or my birth certificate". "I don't mean to pretend I am channelling Abraham Lincoln now, but that's not what he had in mind, I think, when he helped form the Republican Party".

"I wish he would come more often because he reminds Republicans of eight years of misery", said Republican National Committeeman Shawn Steel.

Fox & Friends Weekend host Pete Hegseth, who interviewed President Donald Trump two days ago, declared this morning that former President Barack Obama has "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

Trump was dismissive of Obama's speech.

He blasted the "politics of fear" and said "the only way we reverse anger and division is when citizens step up to say 'we're going to do things differently'". "That is not a check", Obama said. "How hard can that be, saying that Nazis are bad?"

"This is not normal", Obama said during his hour-long address.

Republicans say they aren't anxious.

When Barack Obama took the stage in front of an audience of students at the University of IL on Friday, he was not there to mess around.

Says Pence: "The truth is, the American people in 2016 rejected the policy and direction of Barack Obama when they elected President Donald Trump".

That Illinois speech was a break from tradition - one where former commanders-in-chief don't criticize their successors - but Obama argued that Trump's presidency represented a time when everyone needed to stand up.

"He is a re-energizer for progressives who care about what's at stake and a reminder for independents that we can have a President who isn't an embarrassment to the country", said Jesse Ferguson, a Democratic strategist who worked on Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign.

Following his California visit, Obama will travel to OH next Thursday for an event for Richard Cordray, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in OH, and he is also slated to headline a campaign event in Pennsylvania later this month, and a NY fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, an organization led by former Attorney General Eric Holder, Obama's longtime friend.

Former President Barack Obama on Friday made a rare mention of President Donald Trump.

Obama is speaking Friday at the University of IL, where he's receiving an award for ethics in government.

"Democrats need all hands on deck to take back the House, and we could not be more honored to have President Barack Obama's inspirational voice and unifying message on the campaign trail", Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Ben Ray Luján said.

The remarks were his first steps into the political fray ahead of the autumn campaign for the USA midterm elections. While he has endorsed candidates and appeared at fundraising events, he has spent much of his post-presidency on the political sidelines. Obama is set to speak Friday as he accepts an ethics in government award in IL.

"If the Democrats got in with their agenda in November of nearly two years ago, instead of having 4.2 up, I believe honestly we'd have 4.2 down", Trump said. The speech will be a preview of the argument Obama will make this fall campaign season.

The speech comes ahead of his first midterm campaign events, beginning Saturday, in the political battleground of Orange County, California, where he will stump for several Democratic House candidates.
