According to a report on the reemergence of former President Barack Obama into the public square after giving a scathing speech attacking Donald Trump, White House insiders are anxious that Trump will now become obsessed with going after the former president.

Former President Barack Obama speaks as he campaigns in support of California congressional candidates, on September 8, 2018, in Anaheim, California.

The former United States leader has a long rivalry with Trump, and the incumbent was key proponent of the conspiracy theory that Obama was not born in the USA, which if true would have rendered him ineligible to hold office.

"I will tell you what Barack Obama does that hurts Donald Trump more than the most cutting insult, and that is he takes the cameras off of Trump and takes the attention off Trump", Wilson said.

Also worth remembering: midterm elections were not exactly Obama's forte.

He also criticised Mr Trump's response to the violence a year ago at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted in the death of one person. He also issued a critique of his successor, President Donald Trump, attacking his policies and calling attention to Trump's tendency of pressuring the Justice Department.

"You happen to be coming of age" amid backlash to progress, Obama told the students at University of IL at Urbana-Champaign.

But on Friday, Obama offered his most pointed indictment of the political climate that has formed under the watch of Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress.

"It's a consequential moment in our history", Obama said.

The speech was a preview of the argument that Mr Obama is likely to make until the USA midterm elections in November. "'I don't recognize what's going on in Washington right now - that's not what I believe, '" Obama said.

On Saturday the former president stumped for candidates in California in the Democrats' bid to take back the House of Representatives.

Next week, he plans to campaign in Ohio for Richard Cordray, the Democratic nominee for governor, and Ohio Democrats.

Obama acknowledged positive things had emerged from what he deemed the current "political darkness", like the activism of the students from Parkland High School, the surge of female candidates and the Me Too movement.

"For three cycles (2010, 2012, 2014) President Obama fired up Republicans like nobody", Rep. Steve Stivers, the head of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told reporters on Friday. He said "people feel unsettled, people feel scared", and they're anxious about their children's future.

"You can not sit back and wait for a savior", Obama said.
