The resignations came just hours after the firm's controversial chief executive Mr Musk smoked marijuana live on the web during a podcast with comedian Joe Rogan.

Outside of the reefer madness, the duo chatted about everything from China to humanity to artificial intelligence in the two-and-a-half-hour podcast.

Musk and the host, also added whiskey to the mix.

When Rogan, who happens to be an outspoken advocate for the legalization of marijuana, offered the blunt to Musk, the billionaire playboy first asked whether it was a joint or a cigar.

Shortly after smoking, Musk looks at his phone and laughs, telling Rogan he was getting texts from friends asking why he was smoking weed during the interview. "He jested "'You probably can't do this because of stockholders, right?".

Tesla shares have fallen sharply after two senior executives abruptly left the electric vehicle firm headed by Elon Musk.

He even described the constant flow of ideas in his mind as "a never ending explosion" and said that as a young boy he anxious he might be "insane" as it did not seem to happen to others around him.

"A lot of people don't like humanity and think it is a blight, but I don't", he said.

Musk said he was not as anxious about artificial intelligence than he was previously after "taking a more fatalistic attitude". They both giggled and Musk said, "That would be great".

Musk apologised to Unsworth in July for similar insults he made on Twitter following the rescue of a dozen Thai schoolboys and their football coach from a cave in Thailand.

"How are you going to fix that?"
