U.S. officials claim they are anxious that an impending assault by Syria forces on the terrorists in Idlib could involve the use of chemical weapons, an issue that Damascus has dismissed as false lies by Washington.

France and US have said a chemical attack won't be tolerated while Damascus denies it has such weapons.

The looming battle for Idlib in northwestern Syria may be the last in the bloody seven years of conflict, which have backed hundreds of thousands of civilians into this deadly corner of the country with nowhere to run.

Russian officials have said they have evidence that terrorists in Idlib are now preparing to conduct a false-flag chemical weapons attack in order to spark a military intervention by the United States and its allies.

Indeed, the United Nations' Syria envoy last week described the situation in Idlib as "the flawless storm", with fighting therein expected to cause not only a humanitarian crisis but also further entangle Washington, Ankara and even Jerusalem in the web of destruction.

Turkey, which has long supported anti-Assad rebels, has cooperated with Russian Federation and Iran on talks over Syria in recent years and has troops in the Idlib region on an observation mission. Western powers have warned Syrian troops could use toxic substances against the civilian population as they seek to recapture Idlib.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday met with Syrian opposition head in the capital Ankara. Two points can be drawn from the words of the UN Representative for the Syrian affairs: first, the description of the Tahrir al-Sham (Jabhat al-Nusra) group as a terrorist group, which can be considered a green light to break them up and exclude them from any settlement plans.

It is expected that during the visit to Jordan and Turkey Geoffrey will draw attention to the fact that "military operations in Idlib will lead to escalation of tension in Syria and the region and will endanger the lives of civilians".

The top Syrian diplomat said, however, that Syria was determined to retake Idlib whatever its costs.

United Nations officials say fighting could displace upward of 800,000 civilians from Idlib, yet there is no arrangement to allow safe passage to those who want to escape the fighting.
