Jon Kyl likely to be sworn in on Wednesday

Arizona's Republican Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday announced that Kyl would replace McCain and serve at least until January 2019. Jon Kyl to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Sen.

The appointee named by Ducey could serve in the Senate until the 2020 election, but Kyl said he was only committing to serving in the role through the current session of Congress. Despite McCain's death-defying feud with President Donald Trump, choosing Kyl will likely bolster the administration's political capital.

Kyl said he chose to return to the Senate because of his sense of duty "to the state I love", adding, "I'm putting my country first just as this seat's previous occupant did every single day".

"I haven't been able to get that assurance from Sen".

He adds that Arizona "will be well-served by Jon's willingness to once again serve his country". John McCain, R-Ariz., on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, in Phoenix. By state law the senator will have to be a member of the same party as the departing one, in this case the GOP. Garcia said he would have selected someone like Cindy McCain or former Attorney General Grant Woods, someone who was more in the mold of the late senator and who might be more willing to stand up to Trump.

Kyl served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before he was first elected to the Senate in 1994.

'I think McCain would be very happy with the pick.

If Kyl does leave the Senate in January, Arizona's governor can appoint another person for the remaining year.

Ducey signaled Kyl could be sworn into the Senate in the coming days and pushed back against allegations that the appointment was a politically-motivated move based exclusively on the supreme court nomination.

For Republican voters who are on the fence about Ducey, a choice they dislike could cause them to withdraw their support for the incumbent or stay home on Election Day.

In a February interview with Phoenix-based radio station KJZZ, Kyl described Trump as a "phenomenon that has to be dealt with" and took aim at his combative manner.

Kyl, 76, served alongside McCain in the Senate from 1995 until 2013 and was a consistent conservative vote. "There is much unfinished business, including confirmation of President Trump's nominees for judicial and executive branch positions, and I look forward to getting to work on behalf of my fellow Arizonans", said Senator Jon Kyl. Unlike McCain, whose record was mixed, Kyl voted in favor of a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in 2006, and for ending special funding for minority and women-owned businesses.

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
