"I knew I had a gray beard".

Colbert joked that the book, which is titled Fear: Trump in the White House, is "a book named after the emotion Trump feels whenever he sees a book". Defence Secretary Mattis told an aide that the president has the foreign policy understanding of a "fifth- or sixth-grader" (an 11 or 12-year-old).

The administration found in Woodward's book is one racked with anxiety over the president's erratic behaviors, where everyone is a potential target of Trump's belittlement.

"Mr. Woodward never discussed or verified the alleged quotes included in his book with Secretary Mattis" or anyone within the Defense Department, Manning said.

In the book, Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly is quoted as having doubted Trump's mental faculties, declaring during one meeting, "We're in Crazytown". At the urging of advisers, he then condemned white supremacists and neo-Nazis, but nearly immediately told aides, "That was the biggest fucking mistake I've made" and the "worst speech I've ever given", according to Woodward's account.

But Colbert begged to differ.

He said: "This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration's many successes".

Find out what it is in the clip above. The book offers the first extensive look at dialogue between Mueller and those involved in the Russian Federation investigation.

For Trump, that means denials from the pulpit of the presidency and from allies who had been quoted questioning his intelligence and stability.

This plays out in larger and more troubling ways as well, according to Woodward's book, and history may judge most of Trump's White House team and political party harshly for enabling the president's radical solipsism. "This guy is mentally retarded", the President continued.

A Pentagon spokesman, Col. Rob Manning, said Mattis was never interviewed by Woodward.

"I've been on the receiving end of a Bob Woodward book", he tweeted Tuesday.

Woodward's book, which is described as based on in-depth interviews with those in and around the West Wing, details a dysfunctional White House in which Trump is an unpredictable boss not respected by top aides.

"I'll be a real good witness", Trump told Dowd, according to Woodward.

The book claims Trump calls Attorney General Jeff Sessions "mentally retarded", while describing how his own staff called the president "unhinged" and an "idiot". According to Fear, after Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad launched a chemical attack on civilians in April 2017, Trump called Mattis and said he wanted to assassinate the dictator.

Of course, Kelly and Mattis and other staffers now deny uttering any derogatory opinions of their boss, but we need to stack that up against Woodward's stellar journalistic reputation. They were so appalled by how it went that, according to the book, they met with special counsel Robert Mueller III and re-enacted it as proof that Trump wasn't fit to testify.
