Attorney for Michael Cohen keeps changing his story on Trump Tower meeting

Michael Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, admitted Monday to providing the information for an anonymously sourced CNN story that implied President Trump had advance knowledge of a controversial Trump Tower meeting.

The CNN report from July 27 headlined, "Cohen claims Trump knew in advance of 2016 Trump Tower meeting", cited "sources with knowledge", contradicting repeated denials by Trump and his surrogates, as Fox News previously reported.

"Davis is now expressing regret for his role in all of this saying, 'I should have been more clear that I could not independently confirm what happened". CNN blew this story bigtime, CNN's own sources has recanted, the defenses have all crumbed, and CNN's still stands by it?

"No, he does not", Davis said.

Nevertheless, even to those of us who see the Trump Tower story as the golden snipe in the snipe hunt that is the Russian collusion hoax, Trump lying about such a thing would still be a pretty big deal.

In the past week, when asked directly by CNN's Anderson Cooper whether there was information that Trump knew about his son's meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya beforehand, Davis said, "No, there's not".

Oil slips as trade dispute outweighs US stock decline
Hedge funds and other money managers cut their bullish wagers on US crude futures to the lowest level since mid-June. A weaker United States dollar makes oil, which is priced in dollars, less expensive to buyers in other currencies.

The network, in effect, doesn't appear to believe it made a mistake - the story was, some inside CNN argue, carefully worded to hedge against those in the Cohen camp changing their tune.

Meanwhile, one of my sources (who is not Lanny Davis) informs me that ever since his story fell apart, the 74-year-old Bernstein sits in a dark corner of the CNN break room swilling soy milk and muttering "I am not a fake news crook".

There are three sides to every story - your side, their side, and the truth.

Trump has denied knowledge all along, and fired back following CNN's report last month. And by the media's own standards, that means CNN is pushing fake news.

Sources tell CNBC that prosecutors in the Russian Federation probe continued asking questions about Cohen's role in Trump's campaign - as well as questions "about whether Cohen conducted personal business while working as an employee of the Trump Organization and for insight on why he didn't get a job in the Trump White House" - until at least this past May.
